DanStem PhD Course: Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine

phd course

The course is relevant for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH studying Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, Cellular and Genetic Medicine, and all graduate programmes.

Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine

October 2 - 6, 2017

Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

  1. Understand how tissues form and are subsequently maintained long-term
  2. Obtain insight into the fundamental principles of stem cell biology
  3. Design experiments that will enable her/him to analyse stem cells in vitro and in vivo
  4. Have insights into ethical considerations associated with the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine

Content

The course will cover the essential steps towards the formation of adult tissues with appropriate functions. Throughout there will examples of how we exploit our understanding of the normal development and the subsequent maintenance of adult tissues by stem cells to further both our own research and regenerative medicine. This scientific topics covered will include:

  1. From gastrulation to tissue homeostasis
  2. Transcriptional control of cell fate and stem cell identity
  3. Methods and techniques widely used in stem cell biology
  4. Translating stem cell biology to the clinic
  5. Regulation of adult stem cells with emphasis of the topics of foreign speakers Fiona Watt, Petra Hajkova and Prisca Liberali
  6. Bioethics in stem cell therapies

Participants

PhD students with an interest in stem cell biology. Basic cell and molecular biology knowledge at Bachelor/Master level is needed

Relevance to graduate programmes

The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:

  • Molecular Mechanisms of Disease
  • Cellular and Genetic Medicine
  • All graduate programmes
